Cache County opposed to rebuilding collapsed canal in its present location

Cache County has sent a second letter to the Natural Resources Conservation Service re-affirming its opposition to re-building the Logan Northern Canal at its present location. Cache County is responsible for managing the project and Cache County Executive Lynn Lemon says building in the historic location presents serious safety and liability concerns. But he told the County Council Tuesday the NCRS needs to know the county is not against re-building the canal in the Canyon Road area. “Some in the community felt like the county was really just sending that so we could force the canal to another option, that we wouldn’t consider Canyon Road,” Lemon told the council. “We’ve said that wasn’t our objective. We’ve said we weren’t willing to take the liability to put it back to where it was.” Lemon says federal funding is not available for stabilization of the hillside so the county would be responsible for stabilization costs. Re-building the canal in its original location is one of three options being considered.
