SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah House committee has advanced a resolution to compel flag-makers to correct a decades-old mistake on the state flag. The official Utah flag was adopted in 1911. Its design included a shield bearing the year 1847 – the date Mormons pioneers first entered the Salt Lake Valley.A hand-stitched state flag commissioned in 1922 incorrectly placed that year below the shield. Flag companies have perpetuated the mistake for 89 years. The Deseret News says the House Government Operations Committee on Wednesday unanimously approved HCR 2.Rep. Julie Fisher, R-Fruit Heights, sponsored the resolution. She hopes to teach children the importance of the date and involve them in the political process.Amateur historian Ron Fox initially discovered the error.
