Vision plan revealed for Logan’s downtown

People are sure to be hearing more about a so-called “vision plan” for downtown Logan which was explained last week to Logan’s municipal council by consultant Mark Broder. Logan’s Planning Manager, Glen Goines, says the vision plan comes with some interesting ideas on future development in downtown Logan. On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Friday, Goines said the vision plan comes with specific guidelines. “There’s an economic and market strategy component that is going to get specific with regard to short term and long term business strategies,” Goines explained, “things that individual stores and shops should do to the facades of their buildings, the activities they should engage in, the combined activities of the downtown, if there’s a downtown-wide event, that kind of thing.” Goines says the vision plan has a wide range of proposals for mixed-use development along with funding options. Residents have an opportunity to give their input into the proposed “vision,” which includes such possibilities as a one-way couplet along 100 East northbound and 100 West southbound to alleviate traffic congestion along Main Street. Economic Development Director Kirk Jensen said the proposed plan includes mixed use development, terraced parking and a strong civic presence. Jensen says one of the first projects could be an enlarged civic plaza behind the Coppermill Restaurant. “As you come into Main you want your downtown to look very attractive in terms of the store fronts, facades,” Jensen said. “But as far as creating more vibrancy, you could envision the west sides of these buildings are more conducive to people window shopping. “There’s a plaza out there where people, maybe after eating in a cafe or a restaurant, spill out into this plaza and socialize.” Also proposed is new housing along north 100 West and new retail along west 100 North, a city hall expansion with ground floor retail and a new community recreation center. He says the consultant’s vision for Logan’s downtown can be viewed on the Logan City website
