A onetime Utah State University faculty member who was also chief historian for George Patton’s Third Army, died Friday.Brigham Dwain Madsen was 96. He was best known for his studies of Native Americans.Madsen also taught history at BYU but resigned after six years over the issue of academic freedom. In addition to another teaching career at the University of Utah, he became director of Utah’s J. Willard Marriott Library.Gary Bergera, who directs a Utah historical research group, said Brig Madsen was a “historian’s historian.”
