Blizzard warning prompts early closings for schools

In anticipation of a major winter storm and a blizzard warning from the National Weather Service, the Cache and Logan School Districts have announced that schools will be closing early Tuesday. Wayne Reese, Cache County School District transportation director, says that schools will be using the “Friday schedule” Tuesday. Essentially, that means schools will be let out anywhere between 12:45 and 1:45 p.m. Reese says Kindergarten classes will also be getting out at a Friday early release time Tuesday. Utah State University President Stan Albrecht authorized the university’s closing beginning 2 p.m. Tuesday and lasting through 9 a.m. Wednesday. All classes from 2 p.m. on are canceled, and university offices will not reopen until at least 9 a.m. Wednesday. Students are off Wednesday due to the Thanksgiving break. This closure applies to USU campuses across the state due to the blizzard warning. All closure updates will be posted on the university’s home page, www.usu.edu. Logan City School District Superintendent Marshal Garrett has announced that the following schools will release early on Tuesday: Adams Elementary at 12 noon; Bridger Elementary at 12 noon; Ellis Elementary at 12 noon; Hillcrest Elementary at 1 p.m.; Wilson Elementary School at 1 p.m.; Woodruff Elementary at 12 noon; Mount Logan Middle School at 12:25 p.m.; Logan High School at 12:10 p.m. (buses will leave at 12:30 p.m.). No kindergarten classes will be held Tuesday. Riverside Pre-school will not be open on Tuesday. If parents have any questions about their child’s school, they are encouraged to call that school. Edith Bowen school will also be closed at 1 p.m. Both north and south campuses of Thomas Edison Charter School will release at 12:30 p.m. and there will be no kindergarten. Intech Collegiate High School will release at 1:35 p.m. Fast Forward Charter High School will be closing at 1 p.m. Cache Employment and Training Center will also be closing at 1 p.m. Stevens-Henager College will be closing at 2 p.m. and will not be holding any night classes. Bridgerland Applied Technology College will also be closing down at 1 p.m. and they, too, will not be conducting night classes. The Box Elder County School District will not be closing early, they will be continuing on the same schedule today. However, the scheduled Bear River High School basketball game at Mountain View Tuesday evening has been postponed. There is no word yet on when the game will be rescheduled. The pending blizzard has also prompted Logan City offices to close early. All staff will be sent home at 3 p.m. and all offices will be closed. Logan City road crews will be out in advance of the storm and advises motorists to try to stay off the roads as much as possible later Tuesday afternoon as the storm front reaches Cache Valley. The brunt of the arctic front is expected to arrive in the early afternoon and extend through early Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service is urging people to avoid travel Tuesday night in what could be blizzard and white-out conditions throughout Northern Utah and Southeast Idaho.
