SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A governor’s education commission is completing an action plan to encourage more Utahns to get college degrees. The Education Excellence Commission meets Tuesday to prioritize its goals and make specific recommendations. The commission wants to see 66 percent of all Utahns aged 20 to 60 earn a college degree, certification or training by 2020. The 31-member commission’s work has been endorsed by the state Board of Regents, the Board of Education and the Utah College of Applied Technology Board of Trustees. Among the commission suggestions are restoring extended-day kindergarten, supporting a statewide goal of 90 percent proficiency in 3rd grade reading and 6th grad math and expanding private industry/public education partnerships.
