LOGAN, Utah – Kanani Danielson had 12 kills to lead No. 5 Hawai’i to a three-set win against Utah State (25-18, 25-22, 25-16) here Monday night in a Western Athletic Conference match that was televised nationally on ESPNU. Utah State falls to 15-7 overall and 3-6 in WAC play with the loss and Hawai’i improves to 19-1 on the season and 9-0 in the WAC with the win. Senior middle blocker Shantell Durrant (American Fork, Utah) had seven kills and four blocks to lead Utah State, while fellow senior middle blocker Katie Astle (Sandy, Utah) added six kills and five blocks. Durrant finished the match with a .462 (7-1-13) hitting percentage and Astle hit .417 (6-1-12). Chanteal Satele added 10 kills for Hawai’i and Elizabeth Ka’aihue had 22 digs. Utah State and Hawai’i combined for nine ties and three lead changes during the first set before the Rainbow Wahine went on a 4-0 run to break a 15-15 tie en route to its 25-18 win. UH hit .149 (16-9-47) in the first set and USU hit .026 (7-6-39). Utah State held an early 4-3 lead in the second set, but Hawai’i used a 5-2 run to take a 10-7 advantage and never trailed again as it posted the 25-22 win. The Rainbow Wahine hit .296 (12-4-27) in the second set and USU hit .216 (15-7-37). Hawai’i scored five of the first six points in the third set and led by as many as eight at 20-12 as it coasted to the 25-16 win. UH hit just .061 (11-9-33) in the third set, but held USU to a negative .051 (7-9-39) hitting percentage. Utah State finished the match with a .061 (29-22-115) hitting percentage and Hawai’i hit .159 (39-22-107). UH also had eight more digs (52-44), five more service aces (6-1) and 3.5 more team blocks (13.0-9.5), while USU had three more service errors (6-3). Utah State will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 28 when it plays at San Jose State (8-15, 3-6) at 8 p.m. (MT). -USU-
