LOGAN, Utah – Senior forward Lauren Hansen tied Jayme Gordy for the most points scored in Utah State soccer history in the Aggies’ 3-0 non-conference win over Houston Baptist Sunday at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field.With two goals, Hansen now stands alone in second place in career goals scored with 34. She is one goal away from tying Jayme Gordy (1997-2000) for first place in career goals. With the four points, Hansen now has 77 career points, tying her with Gordy’s career total.With the win, the Aggies improve to 7-4-4 this season, while Houston Baptist falls to 3-10-1 overall. Utah State has now won four-straight matches.”We were very dangerous on corner kicks Sunday. The first half was good possession wise. In the second half, we made some adjustments. We were able to have good speed of play and have good possession and that helped us create numerous opportunities,” USU head coach Heather Cairns said.Five different Aggies earned a point today, beginning in the 18th minute when junior forward Shantel Flanary scored her sixth goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Kendra Pemberton’s long pass reached Hansen who got the ball to Flanary. The junior headed the ball in from five yards to give Utah State the early 1-0 lead.”It has been so good. I think that playing the hard teams that we played in the pre-season made us a lot better for this. Now we are prepared, and we have kind of gotten into our rhythm. So now we are starting to play really good, and hopefully we just keep getting better,” Pemberton said.In the second half, Hansen took control scoring twice in the final 45 minutes of play. In the 47th minute, the senior gave USU the 2-0 advantage with her eighth goal of the season. This time it was Flanary who fed Hansen the ball with the senior scoring from 14 yards out to an open goal. The assist was Flanary’s fourth of the season.The Aggies scored their final goal of the match in the 63rd minute. Senior midfielder Stefani Shiozaki had her team-leading sixth assist of the season. Shiozaki’s corner kick reached the head of junior defender Marissa Sanchez who then found Hansen for her ninth goal of the year. The assist was the first of the year for Sanchez.Goalkeepers Molli Merrill and Ashlyn Mulford each played 45 minutes to earn USU’s sixth shut out of the season with each keeper earning one save.After 90 minutes of action, Utah State out-shot Houston Baptist, 21-2, with 11 shots in the second half. The Aggies also had the lead in corner kicks, 8-1.After the brief break from non-conference action, the Aggies return to Western Athletic Conference play on Friday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. against Boise State.
