LOGAN, Utah – Senior forward Lauren Hansen tied Brigid Turner for second-place in career goals scored with her two goals Friday as the Utah State soccer team defeated Nevada, 3-1, in Western Athletic Conference action at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field.With two goals, Hansen tied Turner (1999-2002) with 32 goals. She is three goals away from tying Jayme Gordy (1997-2000) for first place in career goals. With the four points, Hansen now has 72 career points and is one point shy of tying Turner for second in that category.With the win, the Aggies improve to 6-4-4 this season and 3-0-0 in WAC play, while Nevada falls to 6-6-2 overall and 1-2-0 in league contests. This is the second-best WAC start for USU. In 2008, the Aggies also won their first three WAC matches.Utah State has now won three-straight matches. The Aggies improve their stellar home WAC record to 16-1-2 in six years.Utah State got on the board first when Hansen scored her first goal of the day in the 18th minute, Senior midfielder Stefani Shiozaki crossed the ball to freshman midfielder Kendra Pemberton whose header got Nevada goalkeeper Dana Moreno out of position. With an empty net, Hansen scored her sixth goal the season.”It is very exciting,” Hansen said of her record-setting goals. “From the beginning of the season, I knew how many goals it was going to take to get here. But honestly, it was my teammates. Both those goals, I was just there at the right time. It is because of the hard work of my teammates.”Hansen made the score 2-0 with the 23rd minute with her second goal of the match. Once again, the senior was in the right place and the right time, taking a Natalie Norris deflection and scoring from three yards out.”Lauren (Hansen) and Shantel (Flanary) are two of the best 1-2 punches in the WAC. When they are both clicking we are good team, offensively. A lot of their confidence is tied to goal scoring, so it was really good that both those guys popped some in today,” USU head coach Heather Cairns said.In the first half, the Aggies out shot the Wolf Pack 9-4. USU also had three corner kicks to Nevada’s two. Nevada’s Moreno had three first-half saves to two by USU’s Molli Merrill. Moreno was replaced in the second half by Marie Cove.Nevada cut the lead in half in the 69th minute when Annabelle Allen scored her first goal of the season. After a Utah State foul, Allen delivered a well-placed free kick just over the head of Merrill.The Aggies sealed the victory when Shantel Flanary scored her first goal since Sept. 12 against Colorado College to give USU a 3-1 lead. Flanary’s goal in the 87th minute came off the a cross by freshman Libby Lundquist. The assist was her first collegiate point.Utah State ended the match out-shooting the Wolf Pack 18-8 and had eight corners to Nevada’s two.
