Man stabbed in Tremonton

An 18-year-old male was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being stabbed outside of Ridley’s Market in Tremonton Sept. 30. According to a Tremonton Police Department press release, witnesses said two groups of young adults started arguing around 4 p.m. Thursday in front of the store. The fight turned physical, and in the course of the brawl, Felix Maldonado, Jr., was “stabbed repeatedly” in the chest and abdomen. After he was stabbed, many participants and witnesses fled the scene. The press release states officers from the Utah High Patrol and Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office assisted Tremonton officers in locating and interviewing several suspects and witnesses. Maldonado and an 18-year-old female, who said she was assaulted during the fight, were taken to Bear River Valley Hospital. The female was treated and released for non-life threatening injuries. Maldonado underwent emergency surgery and was then taken by helicopter to the McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden. As of Friday morning, he was reported to be in stable condition. A 15-year-old suspect was located in Brigham City and booked into a youth detention facility in Logan for attempted criminal homicide charges. A few hours after the juvenile suspect was located, police arrested and booked a 20-year-old male near Plymouth into the Box Elder County Jail on simple assault charges. More charges are “possible and pending” against other participants and the victims, the press release states, and a search warrant was executed on a residence in Tremonton. David Nance, chief of police for the Tremonton Police Department, said while some of Thursday’s suspects and victims have gang ties, police don’t necessarily believe the fight was gang-motivated.
