Utah’s largest teachers union is endorsing Sam Granato, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate. Granato picked up the Utah Education Association’s endorsement Monday. Granato is a restaurateur running against Republican Mike Lee to replace outgoing Senator Bob Bennett. Bennett had been seeking a fourth term but failed to advance to the Republican primary because many delegates did not find him conservative enough. Granato said his opponent, Lee, wants to do away with the Department of Education and does not want federal funding going to education. Granato said he is grateful for his endorsement. “We are still the United States. We’re not the divided states,” Granato said. “It’s not Republican, Democrat. It’s all of us together. We need to work towards the goal of better education for all of us.” Granato also has the endorsement of Logan Mayor Randy Watts, and signs reading “Republicans for Granato” can be found on some local lawns.
