LOGAN, UT – Students from the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business are inviting the community to celebrate Business Week with them, opening up a concert, barbecue, relay race, dance marathon, golf tournament and a free lecture by Stephen R. Covey to the public. The Huntsman School of Business plans a special Dean’s Convocation that features Covey Thursday, Sept. 30. The free convocation is scheduled for the Performance Hall on the Utah State University campus at 3:30 p.m. Covey, an international best-selling author, became the Jon M. Huntsman Professor of Leadership in February 2010. His announced topic for the Dean’s Convocation is, “Principle Centered Leadership: The Way to a Great Career and Life.” Much of the presentation will focus on principles outlined in his most recent book, “Great Work, Great Career.” Dr. Covey has written many best-selling books but is best known for the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” The Business Council, a student-run organization at the Huntsman School of Business, is planning the event. “The last time Dr. Covey came to speak we ran out of space and filled two overflow rooms with people who wanted to hear him talk,” said Skyler Jenks, the Huntsman Business Senator who leads the council. “In the business world, he’s a rock star. His books have sold millions, and his advice is still sought by some of the world’s most successful companies. We are so grateful that he has agreed to come be a part of our celebration.” Covey is one of several speakers who will be on campus during Business Week, an annual event slated to begin Sept. 24 and go through Oct. 1. The first event of the week, a dance marathon, could prove an educational experience for the two winners. The grand prize for the dance, on Sept. 24 in the George Nelson Field House starting at 7 p.m., will be a tuition waiver for a semester. The fund-raising event, cosponsored by Sigma Chi, is open to all students and the community. The tuition waiver for two USU students comes compliments of USU Admissions. Other prizes, including iPads, will be offered to contestants. Several other fund-raising events during Business Week have also been planned and all proceeds will go to the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Jenks said. On Sept. 28, a Dean’s Convocation will be part of a two-day Partners In Business Operational Excellence Seminar and will feature Roger Martin, author of “The Design of Business.” This convocation will be open to all USU students and to those who have registered for the seminar. Martin is an advisor on strategy to the CEO’s of several major global corporations and has served as dean of the Rotman School of Management for 12 years. The “Times” (of London) and “Forbes.com” called him one of the top 50 management thinkers in the world in 2009. In 2007, “Business Week” called him a “B-School All-Star,” saying he was one of the 10 most influential business professors in the world. A third Dean’s Convocation, which is free and open to the public, is slated for Oct. 1, at 12:30 p.m., in the Orson A. Christensen Auditorium, Room 215, at the George S. Eccles Business Building. It will feature Henry J. Eyring, who has written a book called “Major Decisions: Taking Charge of Your College Education.” Eyring’s presentation is called, “Why an airline executive can make ten times as much as a pilot and what it means for your education.” Eyring, advancement vice president at BYU- Idaho, has also written the book, “Mormon Scientist: The life and Faith of Henry Eyring.” Business Week also includes a barbecue, concert, relay and golf tournament, which are fundraisers. All proceeds from those events will go to the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The all-you-can eat lunch is $7. * Sept. 28 – Last Dash Relay, a 10-mile, two-person twilight race at 5:30 p.m. The race starts and ends between the George S. Eccles Business Building and the Merrill-Cazier Library.
