LOGAN, Utah – Sophomore defender Natalie Norris used her head to score two goals and an assist in Utah State’s 4-0 win over Utah Valley and Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field on Sunday. The Wolverines are coached by former assistant coach Brent Anderson and former USU player Rachelle Dixon. With the win, the Aggies improve to 2-0-0. It is the second-straight season that the Aggies have started the season 2-0-0. “One thing I told the team was that Sunday wins don’t come easy, especially the first Sunday of the year because we haven’t played two games in a weekend,” USU head coach Heather Cairns said. “It was going to be as much about effort and desire as it was X’s and O’s. I thought that they really stepped up to the challenge. They put one away in the first half, and put it away with authority as the game progressed.” Utah State took the early 1-0 lead off a set piece in the 27th minute. Junior defender Summer Tillotson delivered a well-placed corner kick to sophomore Natalie Norris. The defender headed the ball into the back left corner of the net for her first goal of the season. In the first half, the Aggies out-shot the Wolverines, 6-2, and led in the cornerkick category 5-0. USU ended the match with 10 corner kicks compared to one for UVU. The Aggies came out aggresive in the second half scoring in the 63rd minute. USU scored its second of three goals off of corner kicks. Senior Stefani Shiozaki got the play started with a corner kick from the left side of the field. Shiozaki kicked the ball to Norris who headed it to junior Marissa Sanchez, who knocked it in to give USU the 2-0 lead. The assist was the first of the season for both Norris and Shiozaki. In the 74th minute, junior Shantel Flanary scored her second goal of the season with another header from five yards out. Flanary received the ball from freshman midfielder Kendra Pemberton. The assist was Pemberton’s first collegiate point to give the Aggies the solid 3-0 lead. Norris was not done yet, adding her second goal of the day in the 87th minute. Not surprisingly the goal was a header off of a corner kick. Norris was six yards out when the Shiozaki corner reached her head. Norris has now matched her point total of all of last season with four. She also matched her game-winning goal total with one. “I thought we came out really strong and played together as a team,” Natalie Norris said. “The biggest thing was that we came out and played our game right from the beginning, instead of taking 20 minutes to get into a groove like we did at Rio Tinto. We defended well as a team today.” The Aggies now improve to 3-1 against the Wolverines. Utah State now hits the road to take on Idaho State, looking to break a two-match losing streak against the Bengals. Last season, the Bengals stopped the Aggies, 1-0, in Logan.
