This Saturday there will be treasure to be found in Mendon.For the first time, Mendon’s Pioneer Day Celebration will include a team relay race for teenagers, much like the Great Race which will take place earlier that day. Teams will have to complete tasks at eight different stations, such as chugging a liter of root beer, jump roping down the soccer field and a wheelbarrow race.The relay ends with a team member trying to find a gold coin in the bottom of a pool. The pool will have 11 silver coins to wade through and only one gold.Pioneer Day events begin at 6:30 a.m. with a Sunrise run or walk starting at Mendon Station and ends with fireworks in the evening.The animal events – pig chase, mutton buster, chicken chase and rabbit chase – begin at 9 a.m. Robins said she expects 500 people to show up for the animal events.The 8th annual Great Race starts at 1 p.m. Nearly 250 people will participate in the Great Race, Robins said. The race involves watermelon eaters, sawing logs, dunk tanks, jump ropes and ends with two people eating cobbler.After the Great Race, those 250 participants will be hot and in need of cooling down. Robins said the firemen will break out their trucks an hose everyone down at the large soccer field. There will also be a lot of foam, she said.”It’s the biggest bubble bath you’ve ever seen,” Robins said.A softball tournament will begin at 3 p.m. and last until 10 p.m. Robins said this is Mendon’s 41st year of including a softball tournament. A fireworks show will take place after the completion of the tournament.A full list of the day’s activities:- 6:30 a.m. – Sunrise 2k/5k/10k Run/Walk at Mendon Station.- 7 a.m. – All You Can Eat Breakfast hosted by the Volunteer Fire Department. Breakfast costs $4 per plate or $16 per family at the Mendon Food Stand.- 8 a.m. – Flag ceremony.- 8:30 a.m. – Daybreak Kids Scramble, for children ages 3 to 12. The scramble begins at the basketball courts.- 8:30a.m. – Pancake eating contest.- 9 a.m.- Library book sale under the Mendon Station bowery.- 9 a.m. – Animal events.- 9 a.m. – Vendor fair at the East Parking Lot.- 9 a.m. – Volleyball tournament.- 10:30 a.m. – Frisbee golf at the flagpole.- 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Art, photography and quilt show at Mendon Station. There will be a raffle for a quilt. Tickets cost $1 per tickets or six tickets for $5.- 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – The Willie Historic Home is open for self tours.- 11 a.m. – The hamburger stand opens.- Noon – Parade on Main Street.- 1 p.m. – Great Race.- 2 p.m. – Fireman’s Hosedown at the large soccer field.- 2 to 6 p.m. – Kids games, pony rides, inflatable rides, wagon rides and dunking machine. Tickets cost $1 for four tickets, or $10 for an unlimited ride pass.- 3 to 5 p.m. – Horseshoe tournament next to the volleyball court.- 3 to 10 p.m. – Softball tournament, with fireworks following.- 3 to 9 p.m. – Navajo tacos by Kirk Family Catering at the Mendon Station.- 6 p.m. – Bingo at the large soccer field.- 6:30 p.m. – Teen relay race on the large soccer field.- 7 p.m. – Food contest wards at the East parking lot.- 7:30 p.m. – Mendon Cottage Library service and goods auction.
