Morgan Bowen says it was great news to learn that EnergySolutions has decided to abandon its plans to dispose of nuclear waste from Italy in Utah.Bowen is a Democrat from Hyde Park challenging incumbent Republican First District Congressman Rob Bishop in the November election. Bowen says it was interesting that the company made the announcement to Democratic U.S. Representative Jim Matheson.”I think probably because Congressman Matheson was a co-sponsor on the bill to prohibit foreign radioactive waste from coming into the country,” Bowen exclaimed. “I think that’s why he became the point of contact on that. He was the one Congressman who stood up to it and it wasn’t even in his district. It was in Congressman Bishop’s district and, of course, Congressman Bishop turned a blind eye to it for a long time.”Bowen says Bishop has also received substantial contributions from EnergySolutions, which polls have shown the people of Utah do not want.
