It’s not window shopping, it’s sidewalk shopping. The Logan Downtown Alliance is putting on its annual Great American Sidewalk Sale this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The annual event, now in its 38th year, features the wares of Logan specialty shops on the sidewalks of Historic Downtown Logan. Joe Needham, President of the Logan Downtown Alliance, sees the event as a way to boost local commerce. “You know, half of the retailing gets done out of big box [stores], not in downtown,” he says. “But we’ve got a lot of specialty shops here, and yeah, its good for the shops.” The Sidewalk Sale brings people out of their homes and downtown to see what Logan has to offer, he explains. “The downtown businesses pull their goods out, a lot of stores even order in stuff at great prices.” The Sidewalk Sale is just one of the promotions the Alliance puts on through the year, but it is the best known. This year’s event will be a little different than others in recent memory but the quality is still the same. “It’s equal to other years,” Needham assures. “Last year we probably went a little over kill,” he admits. “We had some kid’s rides and some other stuff going on on the county corner. We’re not doing that this year. But vendor-wise we’re pretty much the same numbers and it should be a really good sidewalk sale.” The Logan Downtown Alliance helps the city in many ways. They’re responsible for the lamp posts around the tabernacle and the new look of Logan’s historic downtown, which will be adopted within the next six months. “We’ve helped with the $150,000 city plan which is creating the direction that Logan’s downtown should go,” Needham says. “So they give the Alliance stuff to work on.” The sidewalk sale is not limited to stores located on Main Street, but includes vendors in all of Historic Downtown Logan. The sale runs Thursday through Saturday from 8 am to 10 pm each day.
