SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of its future temple in Brigham City. The ceremony for the Brigham City Temple will occur on July 31 and is open to the public. Mormon temples are different from the church’s meeting houses, where members meet for Sunday worship services. Temples are open only to church members. The church performs marriages, proxy baptisms and other ceremonies in its temples. Building and landscape designs for the temple were created to reflect both the history of the town and other historic temples in that state. Fencing will surround the temple grounds, which will include a water fountain and fruit trees. There are currently 13 operating temples in Utah.
