The Society of Professional Journalists has announced the Region 9 Mark of Excellence winners for the 2009 calendar year, and student-produced television programs at Utah State University won Best All-Around Newscast honors. “Cache Rendezvous,” the student TV news magazine show, and ATV News, the weekly newscast, went one-two in the competition. Both are programs in the Department of Journalism and Communication at USU. Student journalists from USU were also recognized at the competition. In the Feature Writing category, Brendon Butler took the second and third place awards for “Hangin’ with the peeps” and “AgrAbility — Farmers working despite disabilities” respectively. C. Ann Jensen took third place in the General Column Writing category. According to the SPJ website, this year’s region competition received more than 3,600 entries. The honorees were awarded certificates at an award ceremony April 10 during the Region 9 SPJ Spring Conference held at the Denver Press Club in Denver, Colo. First- and second-place regional winners advance to the national round of judging. National winners will be announced in early May.
