More and more these days we are hearing the word “mediation” which is utilized by people who want to settle disputes without going to court.Local Marriage and Family Therapist Vic Nelson has been a mediator for several years and he says that means assisting people in making their own decisions by providing necessary information, clarifying issues and suggesting possible compromises. On KVNU’s Crosstalk Show Tuesday, Nelson said mediation can save a great deal of money, especially with something like a divorce which can cost $20,000 or more.”Mediated divorces can be done far, far less expensively,” Nelson says. “Some of the cases I’ve worked on the divorcing parents only need four or five hours of mediation services, they can use online resources to do all their divorce filings and for something in the neighborhood of two to three thousand dollars they can complete their entire divorce. Many parents have done it for far less than that, even.”Nelson says among the disputes that can be mediated are neighborhood issues, workplace issues, business relationships and partnerships, debt resolution and personal and family relationships.
