County council to discuss group home expansion

The Cache County Council is expected to vote Tuesday approving or disapproving a reasonable accommodations request for a new group home in the Mt. Sterling area. At the last meeting several people spoke out against the Uinta Academy’s requested group home for 12 teenage girls with mental disabilities. There is time set aside for public comment at 6:30 Tuesday night. The council meeting starts at 5 p.m. The proposed group home is approximately 575 feet from the closest existing family home.Opponents say the group home could mean devaluation of their property, increased traffic and some said it wold not fit in with the character of a neighborhood.Jeff Simpson, Uinta Academy’s co-owner and executive director, has called Uinta Academy, “one of the premier treatment programs in the nation for treating adolescent girls with mental health disabilities.”
