Competency hearing sought for man who tried to poison mother-in-law

LOGAN, Utah (AP) – A lawyer for a Hyrum man accused of trying to poison his mother-in-law is seeking a mental competency evaluation before the next court hearing Jan. 5. Cache County sheriff’s investigators say they found rat poison accumulated in the bottom of a paper milk carton at 36-year-old Robert W. Smith’s mother-in-law’s home on Nov. 15. They say the woman called the sheriff when she noticed the milk was blue.
