Canal company burying its system

The Preston-Whitney Canal Company is eliminating its open-canal system. Instead, the company is burying light blue 36-inch PVC pipe to utilize gravity for pressure irrigation and reduce the loss of water to both evaporation and seepage. The Preston Citizen reports that crews have been digging trenches and placing the pipe through the Preston Golf Course as part of a seven-and-one-half mile enclosed system that extends from Foster Reservoir to Fairview. Canal company president Lyle Porter says the enclosed system should save 25 to 40 percent of the water they lose from an open canal system.
