Utah State volleyball defeats San Jose State in four sets

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Christine Morrill tied her career-high with 29 digs and Liz McArthur had a match-high 20 kills to lead Utah State to a four-set win (25-20, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23) against San Jose State here Thursday night.Utah State, who has now won six straight regular season matches against the Spartans, improves to 14-12 on the season and 5-8 in Western Athletic Conference play with the win, while San Jose State falls to 1-22 overall and 1-11 in league play with the loss.Morrill, a junior libero from Neola, Utah (Union HS) had a three service aces to go along with her career-high tying 29 digs in the match. McArthur, a sophomore outside hitter from St. George, Utah (Snow Canyon HS) hit .304 in the match (20-6-46) and added eight assists. Junior middle blocker Shantell Durrant (American Fork, Utah) also played well for USU as she hit .538 (7-0-13) and finished the match with seven kills and four block assists.Kylie Miraldi had 15 kills to lead San Jose State while Sarah McAtee had 10 kills.Utah State used a 6-1 run midway through the first set to break open a close game en route to the five-point win. McArthur had seven kills for USU in the first set as it hit .345 (14-4-29) and San Jose State hit .226 (12-5-31) McArthur added six more kills in the second set as Utah State used a 5-0 run to turn a 13-9 deficit into a 14-13 advantage and eventually won the set by two points. USU hit .195 (16-8-41) in the second set as compared to a .200 (13-5-40) hitting percentage for the Spartans.Utah State seemed to be on its way to a three-game sweep as it led 17-12 in the third set before San Jose State went on an 8-2 run to take the lead and went on to win the set, 25-22. SJSU hit .292 (19-5-48) in the third set and USU hit .163 (11-4-43).San Jose State began set four by scoring the first seven points before Utah State rallied with a 7-1 run to get back into the game. The Aggies then went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-13 lead midway through the set and finished the match by scoring five of the final six points to complete the comeback. In the fourth and final set, Utah State hit .259 (9-2-27) and San Jose State hit .105 (14-10-38). McArthur led USU in the final set as she had five kills on 10 swings with no hitting errors.Utah State finished the match with a .229 (50-18-140) hitting percentage while San Jose State hit .210 (58-25-157). USU also had two more team blocks (7-5) and one more dig (60-59) in the match, while SJSU had six more service errors (13-7). Both teams finished the contest with 10 service aces.Utah State will remain on the road as it travels to Honolulu to play Hawai’i on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. (MT).
