Hyde Park will find out who their new mayor is next Wednesday. After Tuesday’s election, Tom Price and Bryan Cox were separated by just one vote, having received 430 and 429 votes respectively. The Hyde Park Board of Canvassers, which is also the Hyde Park City Council, will open the ballots and count them on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Hyde Park City Hall before the City Council meeting, said Hyde Park Mayor Dave Kooyman. “The law states that we cannot open those until at least seven days after the election and not more than 10 days after the election,” Kooyman said. “The provisional ballots have either been certified or rejected.”Kooyman said he didn’t know how many of the 12 provisionals were accepted or rejected. If after the provisional ballots are counted the candidates are still tied, a coin will be flipped to determine who will serve as mayor. That’s exactly what happened in 2005 when Kooyman ended up tied after a recount with Marilyn Grunig. A coin flip resulted in Kooyman serving another term as mayor.
