An Iraqi veteran from Logan who got national attention when he walked 500 miles through the state of Utah protesting the war, has been named as recipient of the Gandhi Peace Award. He said he felt an urgency to let people know that supporting the troops is not supporting the war in Iraq. On Sunday, a Salt Lake City group presented Thompson with the Gandhi Alliance for Peace Award. The award honors individuals who, by their example, uphold and promote the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy. The celebration is in honor of the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and his commitment to truth, non-violence, service and justice. Gandhi led a march to draw attention to what he believed to be the unjust policies of the British Colonial government.Thompson’s march across the state has been filmed into a documentary entitled “A Soldier’s Peace.”
