Utah State soccer wins program’s 100th match with 5-1 victory Sunday

HOUSTON – With an offensive explosion of five goals, the Utah State soccer team won the program’s 100th win with a 5-1 triumph over Houston Baptist Sunday in Houston. The Aggies captured the 100th win in their 14th season. “It is very exciting to get the 100th win,” USU head coach Heather Cairns said. “I am excited for Utah State soccer alumni and our current players. Everyone who has ever put on an Aggie soccer jersey has contributed to us earning this milestone.” With the win, Utah State also broke a three-match winless streak and scored the most goals since a 10-1 win against Western Athletic Conference foe Louisiana Tech on Nov. 3, 2007. Sunday was the first-ever meeting between the Aggies and the Huskies. USU improves to 4-2-1 with the win, while HBU falls to 1-3-1. “It was a good win because we had a bit of a shaky performance on Friday,” Cairns said. “It was great to bounce back and get this one on the road. When you are on the road, it is a tough environment. So, I am really proud of the girls.” The Aggies took the early lead in the sixth minute off a penalty kick off the foot of sophomore Shantel Flanary. Junior Heather Pond was taken down in the box by a Husky to lead to the penalty kick. The goal was Flanary’s third of the season. Flanary was also involved in the second goal which was scored in the 10th minute. Flanary crossed the ball to freshman midfielder Ellen Larsen who knocked in her first collegiate goal. The assist was the second of the season for Flanary. The half would end with Utah State holding a 2-0 advantage over the Huskies. The two goals were more than the Aggies had scored in their prior three matches combined. USU came out strong in the second half, scoring less than two minutes into the period. Once again, Flanary was in on the action, scoring her fourth goal of the season. Her second goal of the match was scored unassisted from 30 yards out, shot across the box into top corner of the net to give Utah State the 3-0 lead. In the 69th minute, the Huskies trimmed the lead to 3-1 off of a goal from Isla Cameron, as like Flanary, she also scored a deep goal from 25-yards unassisted, getting the ball passed USU junior goalkeeper Aleena Shelton. The Aggie goalkeepers split time as sophomore Molli Merrill started the first half and Shelton played the second period. Utah State re-claimed the three-goal lead in the 84th minute when sophomore forward Danielle Shorts scored her first collegiate goal of her career. Utah State tallied its final goal in the 86th minute. Junior midfielder Stefani Shiozaki scored her second goal in three matches. Shiozaki knocked in an unassisted goal to take the 5-1 lead. Next week, the Aggies head to the home state of junior forward Lauren Hansen. USU takes on Washington on Friday, Sept. 18 before facing Seattle University on Sunday, Sept. 20.
