Utah State Women’s Basketball announces 2009-10 schedule

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State women’s basketball head coach Raegan Pebley announced the 2009-10 schedule Tuesday with one highlight being that the Aggies will play seven home non-conference games, including their regular season opener against Utah on Nov. 13. Overall, Utah State will play 16 regular season home games this year compared to 15 last season. This is the most home games that the Aggies have ever played. The Aggies could play up to five teams that reached either the NCAA Tournament or the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) in 2008-09, including Portland who USU will face on the road on Nov. 16. USU will also take on Utah which participated in the NCAA Tournament. Western Athletic Conference-foe Fresno State earned its second-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament last season, while Louisiana Tech earned a bid to the WNIT.”With three of our first six games against postseason tournament opponents, we have challenged ourselves tremendously with our non-conference portion of our schedule,” Pebley said. The Aggies will welcome four Beehive State schools to Logan, including Utah, BYU, Weber State and Utah Valley. Last season, the Aggies were 1-2 against these schools as USU did not face Utah. Utah State will take on Southern Utah in Cedar City on Dec. 23 before hosting Utah Valley on New Year’s Eve to round out the 2009 portion of the schedule.”We are thrilled to host Utah, BYU, Weber State and Utah Valley this year in the Spectrum,” Pebley said. “There is some great women’s basketball that theBeehive State has to offer and showcasing so much of it here at Utah State is a great opportunity.”Once again, the WAC will play a double round-robin format. This season, theAggies will play the bulk of its WAC schedule on Wednesdays and Saturdays.”The WAC has worked extremely hard to continue to find ways to improve the women’s basketball schedule,” Pebley said. “We believe the team’s academic welfare, the quality of play, and the potential for fan support will all be effected positively by the Wednesday/Saturday format.”USU opens WAC play on Jan. 6 against Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. The Aggies will play three of their first five WAC games away from the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, including playing at Louisiana Tech, WAC Champion Fresno State and Hawai’i.”Playing at Louisiana Tech and at Hawai’i are two of the toughest road trips. We are scheduled to play both of those during the first round of WAC play. The flip side of that is that four of our last five games heading into the WAC Tournament will be right here in Logan,” Pebley said. The Aggie women have five doubleheaders with the USU men, including three WAC contests.Aggie basketball tickets will be available by contacting the USU Athletics Ticket Office at (435)797-0305 or at 1-888-U-STATE-1 (1-888-878-2831) for more information or visit the Utah State athletic web site at www.UtahStateAggies.com.See the
