Utah State soccer has a strong start in preseason scrimmage Saturday

LOGAN, Utah- Utah State soccer opened the season with a strong intrasquad scrimmage Saturday. The Aggies played two, 40-minute halves and an additional overtime of two, 10-minute, sudden death periods in their annual Blue-White scrimmage. A total of six goals were scored, including a hat trick from sophomore forward Shantel Flanary. “I was really pleased with what we got out of the game today,” said USU head coach Heather Cairns. “We had some great attacking.” Junior midfielder Stefani Shiozaki scored the first goal of the scrimmage with a strong shot to the upper right of the goal off of an assist from senior midfielder Lindsey Smart. Junior forward Lauren Hansen scored the second goal after a one-touch move around the keeper to the open net. Closely following Hansen was junior midfielder Heather Pond with a goal off an assist from sophomore defender Summer Tillotson right before halftime. “I was very happy with our scoring. It wasn’t just our forwards, our midfielders pitched in with some great assists and goals,” Cairns said. In the first half, midfielders scored two of the three goals. They would finish the game adding two more assists to the midfielder scoring tally. Flanary came out in the second half with fire scoring the only two goals of the half. The first came off an assist from sophomore midfielder Allie Maduell. Flanary took the ball and after the keeper came out and had a touch on the ball, Flanary dribbled around her and scored. On Flanary’s second goal, she beat out a defender before making the final goal of regular time. At the end of regulation, the Aggies played two 10-minute overtime periods, in which the first goal would take all, to get USU acclimated to the regular-season rules. Flanary stood out again ending the OT with a goal in the second minute off an assist from Maduell again. “Our overall quality was solid for it being this early in the season. We have some great training sessions planned based on what we saw today,” Cairns said. “We are not at our peak yet but we still have to prepare for Northern Arizona. Today allowed us as coaches to see where we want to go next with our training sessions.” The Aggies will host their first match of the season as they take on Northern Arizona on Friday, Aug. 21 at 4 p.m. at the Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field. Admission to all Aggie soccer matches is free. -USU-
