Hatch: Health care reform needed on several fronts

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, was on national television over the weekend saying there’s nothing un-American about disagreements on issues such as health care reform. He criticized Democratic efforts saying more spending, more taxes and more government is not the answer.Hatch said he believes health care reform is needed to make insurers more accountable and insurance more affordable.”What this means is we have to reduce costs through a number of measures like delivery system reform that would make care more efficient, greater transparency on costs and choices of different insurance options,” Hatch said. “We need to do tort reform and get rid of junk lawsuits that are running up costs of health care through unnecessary defense of medicine.”And, he said, we need to begin to promote prevention and wellness more as a country. Also, any plan with a public option will not receive support from Hatch, the senator said. What he prefers is a plan similar to the Hatch-Kennedy CHIP program. CHIP stands for Children’s Health Insurance Program. On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Thursday, Hatch said that under that plan, the federal money went in block grants to the states where it was used, according to the state’s own demographic needs. He said it worked amazingly well and is considered to be one of the most important health care bills in history.”I would do the same thing with national health care,” Hatch said. “Every state has different demographics. Every state has different needs. Let the states have the money that the federal government would spend on this and let them set up their programs in accordance with their demographic needs.”Hatch argues that if the government did that, there would be 50 different state laboratories and then the country could find out what works and what doesn’t work.He said unfortunately the Obama administration appears to want to control everything with a one size fits all approach.
