SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – The dangers of texting while driving might seem obvious, but for anyone who doesn’t get it, state officials are releasing a 15-minute public-service DVD.The Utah Department of Transportation will hold a news conference today to promote the video documentary on an accident in Cache Valley that killed two scientists on their way to ATK Launch Systems when a driver who was texting collided with their vehicle. For drivers, texting or sending e-mails from a cell phone became a Utah misdemeanor in May.The documentary was part of a sentencing agreement with 22-year-old Reggie Shaw, who pleaded guilty in January to two counts of negligent homicide.Prosecutors say Shaw was thumbing out a text message when his SUV clipped the bumper of a car, which went out of control and was broadsided by a pickup on September 22, 2006. James A. Furfaro, 38, of Logan, and Keith P. O’Dell, 50, of North Logan were on their way to work at ATK Launch Systems, where they designed rocket engines.
