Logan Mayoral candidates on gangs

More than once Logan has been recognized as the safest city in the nation and all four men running for mayor this year are proud of that designation. At a candidate forum Wednesday night, however, all four candidates agreed Logan is not without problems, including a problem with gangs.Mac Haws, one of three challengers to incumbent Mayor Randy Watts, said a great police force and special gang task force keep the small problems from becoming big problems. “I call them ‘wanna be gangs’ because they are not a hard core problem,” Haws said. “Yes we have graffiti and things that cause the city money to help clean up, which is unfortunate. But we do take things seriously when they’re small and that’s why, I think, we are so safe.”Mayor Watts gave a lot of credit to Logan residents because he says they look out for one another and report what they believe to be gang or other criminal activity. John P. Clay said he feels more arrests need to be made when gang activity is discovered.Mike Morrill said although gangs are a reality, compared to other places Logan is indeed a safe city.
