Attempted kidnapping in Smithfield

An apparent attempted kidnapping Wednesday night in Smithfield ended peacefully. Investigation is still on-going but according to reports, a mother and her toddler were finishing a walk in the area of 200 East and 100 South around 9 p.m. The toddler was strapped in her stroller in the front yard while the mother returned their dog to the backyard. In a matter of seconds the mother reported hearing her daughter scream. When she came to the front she reportedly saw a man taking her daughter down the street. She pursued him yelling, and called police. The man reportedly let go of the stroller with the baby inside and took off running.Police arrived and searched the area and found the man within 15 minutes. Detective Travis Allen of the Smithfield Police Department says the man was taken into custody and booked into the Cache County Jail. Allen says the man has a history with the police but nothing of this nature. He says details have been turned over to the Cache County Attorney’s Office and official charges will be filed shortly. He says there are no additional patrols in the area because they believe the man acted on his own and there’s no other threat.
