Qualifications to run for office

With four days left until the deadline, four candidates have filed for Logan municipal offices, two for mayor and two for city council. Mayor Randy Watts has filed for a second four-year term and so far he has just one challenger, Logan City Parks and Recreation Department employee Marc Haws. There are two council seats up for grabs and only two candidates have filed, Holly Daines and Robert Horning. Logan City Recorder Teresa Harris says those interested in running this year can file candidacy in her office until Wednesday, July 15th at 5 p.m.If anyone is wondering about what is necessary to run for office, Harris says it’s really quite simple. “The qualifications to be a candidate are to be a United States citizen at the time of filing,” Harris explains, “be a registered voter of Logan City, and be a resident of the municipality or a resident of the recently annexed area for 12 consecutive months.”Harris says for the first time this year candidates for council are not running for a specific seat. The two who get the most votes in the primary election will go on to compete in the final election in November.
