Opera director criticizes words used during funding request

Utah Festival Opera General Director and Founder Michael Ballam is claiming that certain words were misconstrued during his request for $400,000 in funding from surplus county restaurant tax and RAPZ tax funds.Ballam said Wednesday that words such as “deficit” and “endowment” were used inappropriately when people were talking about the UFOC request. He said Cache County Council Chairman Craig Petersen, a USU economist, has acknowledged that the word “deficit” should never have been used.Ballam received $150,000 of the funding he requested and he said a vigorous campaign has been launched to raise the additional $250,000 the UFOC needs. Meanwhile, he said, the 2009 opera season opens on July 8 and is going to be “world class,” Ballam said.Ticket sales for this year’s opera are outpacing those from last year, Ballam said. The comments were made on KVNU’s Crosstalk show Wednesday morning.
