Hyrum, Lewiston mayors to seek new terms

Count Hyrum Mayor Dean Howard and Lewiston Mayor Kelly Fields as two others who will seek re-election this November.Howard and Fields join Logan Mayor Randy Watts as some of the few current city leaders who will seek another term. Mayors in Wellsville, North Logan, Providence, Hyde Park and Smithfield previously announced they would not be seeking new terms.Howard is busy right now with the city’s Star Spangled week but said he’ll take time tomorrow to do something he feels is important: he’s going to the Hyrum City Offices to file for a second four-year term.He made the announcement Tuesday morning on KVNU’s Crosstalk show with Jennie Christensen, and went on to say that he enjoys the job even though the recession means the city has had to tighten its belt.”Hyrum city has cut their budget by about 10 percent over the last year,” Howard said. “We’re not doing as many capital improvements, some have to be done, but we’ve cut way back.”Howard said current employees have had to take on extra work this summer.”Our part time help this summer is being filled by current employees doubling up helping with lawns and parks and mowing and things like that,” Howard said. “They’re happy to do it.”Fields, Lewiston’s mayor, also will be seeking re-election. With city council experience and one term as mayor behind him, Fields says he will bring a lot of experience to the election table. Under his direction, Lewiston has initiated construction on a grand stand, park improvements, updating the local theater and involving Lewiston in Envision Cache Valley.
