Ruth Maughan not running for another term as Wellsville mayor

She’s the only female mayor in the valley and this November will be the end of the political road for Ruth Maughan, a long-time government fixture in Wellsville. For 26 years Maughan has served either as mayor or a member of the city council in Wellsville, the past 20 years as mayor, and she announced Thursday that she would not be seeking another term. “I’ve had a wonderful experience,” Maughan says. “I’ve learned so much and been able to meet so many new people and hopefully I’ve done a lot for the city while I’ve been in office.” Maughan says it was time for her to step down and spend more time with her family, particularly her grandchildren. “My grandchildren are getting to the point where they need a grandmother a little bit more and I want to spend more time with my family.” Maughan has been the longest serving mayor in the valley and was the first woman president of the Cache Valley Mayors Association. She said she’s proud of a lot of what has been accomplished under her watch, including the development of a general plan for the community. Maughan said she and other city officials worked hard to preserve the corridor on the east side of town because Wellsville is the gateway into the valley. She added that even though she is stepping down, the city will be in sound financial condition for the next mayor.
