The Western Athletic Conference announced its springall-academic teams on Wednesday and Utah State had 93 student-athletesrecognized as 58 earned all-academic team honors, while 35 more were namedto the academic all-freshman/transfer team.Utah State’s 58 academic honorees from its spring sports were by far themost in the league as Fresno State was second with 43, followed by NewMexico State (41), Nevada (37), Hawaiąi (31), Louisiana Tech (29), Idaho(26), Boise State (25), and San Jose State (20).Utah State also had the most individuals honored in both womenąs outdoortrack and field with 24 and menąs golf with six, while the menąs outdoortrack and field team tied with Idaho for top honors in that sport as bothschooląs had 13 student-athletes honored.Senior Vanessa Gledhill, who competes in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track, has now earned academic all-WAC honors eighth times in her career, while junior Erin Stratton earned her sixth academic honor.Student-athletes who earned academic all-conference honors for the fifthtime include Palmer Hawkins, Steve Strickland and Heath Wing from men’strack and field, and Ashley Johnson and Krista Larson from women’s track and field.To be eligible for the spring academic team, a student-athlete must havecompleted one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-pointaverage and have participated in at least 50 percent of the teamąs contests.During the 2008-09 academic year, Utah State had 181 student-athletesrecognized by the league office for their academic achievements.
