Smithfield City survived a series of weekend storms with little damage as compared to last week’s ordeal. Police Chief John McCoy says the city was prepared and that’s what made the difference. McCoy said the city’s storm drains and canals are running at full capacity, and in many cases small geysers are bubbling up in the streets due to manhole covers unable to contain the water. McCoy says the problem the city now faces is run-off from home developments in higher elevation into lower areas. But McCoy says thanks to sandbags being placed in key locations, the water was successfully diverted and there were no reported incidents of flooding.
