North Logan Mayor Carey Watkins says he’s pleased that the Cache County Council has approved a proposal that could eventually lead to a countywide library system. Last night the county council voted unanimously for a plan where non-residents pay $100 for a Logan Library card rather than the current $163. The county will subsidize the fee for unincorporated residents by $30 on an 18 month trial basis and then the county will put the countywide library system on the 2010 general election ballot. Mayor Watkins says North Logan’s council and the Logan Library Board have approved a proposed inter-local agreement with Logan to share library services as a first step. “That simply says, ‘let’s get together and use each other’s libraries for a period of time and develop data.’” Mayor Watkins said that North Logan went out on its own to develop processes to help the libraries work together. “What we did do, on our own, is we had a different computer system than Logan in terms of how we develop data, and we went ahead and made the obligation, about $25,000, in advance, so that our computer system now is totally compatible with Logan’s,” Watkins said.Watkins says the proposed inter-local agreement is now in the hands of the Logan City Council. He says hopefully it will approved because he feels North Logan and Logan need to be together to help form the balance of a countywide library system.
