Kids heading back to school

Logan City Police patrolling crosswalks.

LOGAN — This is the first day, back to school for students in the Cache and Logan School Districts. Cache County Sheriff, Lynn Nelson said deputies will be patrolling school zones beginning today. Motorists are asked to watch for kids around schools. Speed limits around most school zones change to 20 miles per hour, during the morning and afternoon hours. Motorists should also watch for crossing guards who will be helping kids cross busy intersections.

DiAnna Young has been a crossing-guard for 11 years and said even with law enforcement increasing their patrols, drivers still do not notice.

“It takes about the first week for people to get in their mind, okay, school zone again, got to slow down,” said Young. “If you are going to be late for work, take another route or leave a couple minutes earlier.”

The fine for speeding in a school zone starts at one-hundred and eight dollars and requires a mandatory court appearance before a judge. It is also a Enhanceable Offense, meaning if you are cited again, the penalties can increase up to 90 days in jail.
