Mountain Crest comeback falls short at Bear River

Basketball going into hoop

GARLAND – Mountain Crest found themselves down by 27 (50-23) at Bear River, with just a minute in to the third quarter when the Mustang offense came alive. Mountain Crest went on a 28-10 run over the next nine minutes to cut it all the way down to a 60-51 deficit. However, Marshall Netercott missed the front end of a one and one and that was as close as the Mustangs got before falling 69-57.

Together, Mark Huber and Ren Fonnesback average 40 points a game for Bear River. Both combined for 12 in the first before Fonnesbeck caught fire. Fonnesbeck went on a 9-0 run to start the second quarter on his way to an 18 point second quarter. Fonnesbeck and Huber combined for 37 of the Bear’s 45 half time points. Fonnesbeck finished with a game high 34 and Huber was the second leading score with 17. They were the only Bears in double figures.

Connor Willey was a big factor in the third quarter run for Mountain Crest, scoring 7 of his 10 points. Willey also played tough defense on Huber who only had 2 points in the third but fouled out with nine seconds left in the third. Tanner Bone had a team high 14 after scoring a career high 31, including nine 3 pointers the last time these teams met. Caleb Archibald was the other Mustang in double figures with 11.

Bear River went 28/42 from the free throw line, to Mountain Crest’s 6/10, in the first game. In Garland, the game was just as physical but Bear River seemed to benefit from an inconsistently called game. Despite that, there wasn’t as much of a disparity from the charity stripe in this one as Bear River went 7/11 to Mountain Crest’s 7/13. Ultimately, missed foul shots stalled the Mustang run.

Coach Kevin Anderson’s squad was doomed again by one big quarter. Bear River outscored Mountain Crest 30-8 in the second quarter. In the second half of Region 11 play Mountain Crest has seemed to adjust better in the second half. The Mustangs outscored the Bears 25-13 in the third. In the first and fourth quarter the advantage was 26-24 Bear River. Mountain Crest just hasn’t put together four solid quarters in the same game.
