Tax modernization town hall meetings begin this week

The first of several legislative town hall meetings to discuss Utah’s tax system takes place Tuesday in Brigham City. The meeting in Brigham City, and others like it which will take place throughout the state, are part of what is being referred to as a listening tour conducted by the Tax Restructuring and Equalization Task Force. Legislative leaders are pleading with the public to attend these meetings, offer feedback, and listen to the challenges facing future Utah budgets.

Tuesday’s town hall meeting will be held in the Multi-purpose room at the Utah State University-Brigham City campus (989 South Main in Brigham City) beginning at 6 p.m. with an open house. For approximately an hour, those in attendance will have the opportunity to learn about the issue, the process of the task force and have questions answered. At 7 p.m., those involved in the task force will share a presentation on the current challenges facing the state’s budget.

State Senator Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan, is the co-chair of the task force which was created this past legislative session to look for ways to address the state’s current tax structure, get public input and suggest solutions.

“Because we’ve always had the foresight to build for tomorrow, our state has always been at the forefront of economic stability,” Sen. Hillyard said in a statement.

In a previous town hall meeting in Logan, Sen. Hillyard explained that state revenues derived from sales taxes are on the decline as more and more people purchase goods online and as Utah’s economy shifts to be based more on services. Tuesday’s meeting in Brigham City is the closest the task force will come to Logan, though May’s legislative town hall meeting in Logan reviewed many of the same topics.

The Tax Restructuring and Equalization Task Force was created after an attempt to change Utah’s tax structure failed to reach any consensus or momentum during the 2019 legislative session. House Bill 441 became a lightning rod of debate in the business community as the bill appeared to rush through massive changes without much public discussion.
