Logan man sentenced to jail for sexually assaulting woman at late night party

LOGAN — A 24-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to one-year in jail for sexually assaulting a woman last May. Derrek Sampson told the court he was deeply sorry for the pain that he caused to the victim, before being taken into custody by court bailiffs.

Sampson appeared in 1st District Court Monday afternoon. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to an amended charge of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony; and sexual battery, a class A misdemeanor.

According to prosecutors, Sampson met a woman on a dating app and invited her to his home for a party with several other people on May 12. By midnight, most of those people had reportedly gone to bed or left, and the defendant began engaging in consensual sexual activity with the victim.

However, she told police Sampson allegedly went too far, causing her physical pain and injury. She repeatedly asked him to stop tearfully and attempted to push him off of her.

Sampson later admitted to being under the influence at the time the crimes occurred. He told police that he had too much drink and could not remember all of the events that took place that night.

During Monday’s sentencing, defense attorney Jeanne Campbell defended her client, explaining that he and the victim had an intimate relationship but she often miscommunicated what she wanted romantically. She said, “When she told him ‘no,’ she should have made it clear that she meant no.”

The victim later told the court that she was raped by Sampson. She explained that she told him “no” several times. She said the assault caused her to develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and struggle with thoughts of suicide.

Judge Thomas Willmore praised the victim for her courage, appearing in court. He said, as he reviewed the evidence, the woman tearfully said “no” or “stop” more than 10 times on the night of the crime. He sentenced Sampson to serve one-year in jail, complete 60 hours of community service and pay for the victim’s ongoing counseling. He also ordered him to complete mental health, domestic violence, and psycho-sexual therapy while incarcerated.
