Plastics #3-7 no longer accepted in curbside recycling program

Residents in Cache County are being asked to modify which types of plastics they recycle.

According to Logan City Conservation Coordinator Emily Malik, the company that processes Cache County’s recycling can no longer find a market for plastics numbered 3-7. As a result, the county will no longer accept those types of plastics in mixed recycling containers, effective immediately.

The good news is, the release stated, the county will still accept plastic containers numbered 1 or 2. Examples of these plastics include containers that once held a liquid (or food items like peanut butter & mayonnaise), empty and rinsed soda, juice & water bottles, cooking oil containers, peanut butter & mayonnaise containers, salad dressing containers, milk jugs, cleaning agents, some laundry detergents, bleaching agents, shampoo bottles, and soap containers.

The other common type of household plastic is #5 which the county will no longer accept in the mixed recycling program. This includes items such as yogurt cups, sour cream and cottage cheese containers, margarine and butter containers, clam shells, plastic cups, and more.

The release stressed that plastic bags of all types do not belong in the curbside recycling containers.

According to Malik, “We understand that this is likely a frustrating change for many of our residents as we have all grown to appreciate the diverse recycling options in Cache County. But the reality is that plastics recycling is ‘broken’ in the United States and this trend is nationwide, not just local.”

“In the meantime,” she continued, “we ask that residents take care to only put #1 and #2 plastics in their curbside recycling containers along with paper, cardboard, and metal.”

I hope the county will will send out a new label to replace the on inside the lid of the recycling bin. This will safe time for the sorters and remind consumer too. If it wasn’t for CVD I would never know of this change since I don’t take the paper and don’t listen to local radio, assuming that the county is using those medias to get the word out.
