Utah State hires Weber State Athletics Director Jerry Bovee as Assistant Vice President and Deputy AD

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State University Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hartwell announced Tuesday that current Weber State Athletics Director Jerry Bovee has been named Assistant Vice President and Deputy Athletics Director for External Affairs at USU. Bovee will officially begin his new duties in early June.

In his new role, Bovee will serve as the second in command in the Utah State Athletics Department and oversee all external functions, including some direct sport supervision.

“We are really excited for Jerry to join Utah State Athletics. He’s an Aggie, he received his undergraduate degree from USU, and he began his athletic administration career in our department,” said Hartwell. “Jerry’s familiarity with and knowledge of our program are huge assets for Aggie Athletics. We’ve got a lot of positive momentum within USU Athletics right now and the addition of Jerry to our staff strengthens our department even more.”

Bovee comes to Utah State after spending the past 10 years as the Athletics Director at Weber State University.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to come back to Utah State where this all began for me over 25 years ago,” said Bovee. “The chance to be part of Aggie Nation once again is a thrill for our family. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 12 years at Weber State and value the lifelong relationships I’ve made in Ogden. I look forward now to renewing friendships and being part of the amazing successes happening at Utah State.”

Bovee, who earned his bachelor’s degree in business finance from Utah State in 1992, began his career in athletic administration at USU as he worked as a sales and promotions specialist and later as an Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions at Utah State for four years (1992-95).

Bovee oversaw tremendous growth in fundraising and facility upgrades during his time at Weber State, including improvements to Stewart Stadium and the Dee Events Center. The Marquardt Fieldhouse, a state-of-the-art indoor practice facility, opened in 2013. The facility includes strength and conditioning, training and team rooms, along with rehabilitation areas. Furthermore, a new academic facility for student-athlete success was completed in 2016 and a new state-of-the-art athletic complex on the north end of Stewart Stadium will open in August, 2019.

During Bovee’s tenure with the Wildcats, the football team has seen a huge improvement, including unprecedented back-to-back Big Sky titles in 2017 and 2018 under head coach Jay Hill, who was hired by Bovee in December, 2013. In 2017, Weber State won a school-record 11 games, won a Big Sky title, won two games in the FCS Playoffs and finished the season ranked fifth in the nation. Weber State repeated as Big Sky champions in 2018, again advanced to the FCS Quarterfinals, and was ranked as high as third in the nation, the highest ranking in school history.

In all, Weber State has captured 19 conference championships under Bovee’s watch. The Wildcats’ men’s basketball team won the Big Sky title in 2010, 2014 and 2016, and twice advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Women’s cross country captured four Big Sky titles and advanced to the NCAA Championships all four seasons. The WSU softball team has won three-straight regular season titles and two postseason tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA’s. The men’s tennis team has won three conference regular season titles and the Wildcat men’s track and field, men’s golf and women’s soccer teams have also captured conference titles.

Prior to being named Weber State’s Athletics Director in 2009, Bovee spent two years as the Assistant Vice President for Administrative Support Services at Weber State.

Before coming to Weber State, Bovee served as Assistant Director of the Utah High School Activities Association.

Along with earning his bachelor’s degree from Utah State, Bovee earned his master’s degree from Weber State in business administration in 2010. Bovee was born and raised in Ogden and attended Ben Lomond High School. He and his wife Julie have four children: Jared, Ethan, Addison and Seth.
