Dominion Energy to replace 1 million transponders across Utah

Dead batteries may be causing inaccurate readings for some Dominion Energy customers, but a fix is in the works.

The company is in the process of replacing 1 million transponders across the state. Transponders are attached to your gas meter and are designed to emit a usage read back to the energy company.

“Those batteries were supposed to last about 20 years,” according to Don Porter, Dominion Energy Communications Specialist. “Eleven years into the project, the batteries started failing and they failed in extreme climate areas like St. George and Park City,” he said.

In the event of low/dead batteries, Dominion Energy has to estimate your usage from last year’s bill.

“If we have to estimate the reading more than two months in a row,” said Porter, “we’ll actually send someone over to physically read the meter like we used to in the old days so we can get an accurate reading. We don’t want people paying more or less than they should be paying for their gas.”

The company has replaced 750,000 transponders in the last four years. Over the next year, workers will be in Cache Valley and Southern Idaho replacing an additional 250,000 units.

“We will let people know that work is being done, we don’t just surprise them,” added Porter. “They’ll get some sort of notice to let them know someone will be in their yard to do the work.”

If you have noticed your bill looks off, Porter said the company will adjust your bill accordingly. “They’ll only be charged for the gas they actually used,” he said.

    How do I know if I am getting a new transponder, I never received a notice and there is someone working on my gas meter.
