USU is the first college in Utah to offer a minor in drones

Utah State University is the first college in Utah to offer a minor in drones.

Andreas Wesemann, director of USU’s professional pilot program, said a Business major took the aero-photography drone class and it led to a job.

“He got hired by Aggie Air and he is actually flying, while he is here in college, as a part-time job,” Wesemann explained. “And he’s done all kinds of videos for local folks who need some good quality drone video.”

He said the minor in drones was approved last year and interest has grown rapidly.

“We went from the first class of 40 to over 112 in the classes now. With proper space in the lab I bet you we’re going to double that this time next year.”

Wesemann said when students enroll in drone classes, they learn the basic flight rules.

“We just returned from a conference where Kennecott Copper has hired several drone pilots to help monitor the mine. They can take data at a very low altitude so they can get information to the engineers on the ground very quickly.”

Dan Robinson, a veteran of over 30 years flying drones, is the primary instructor for the classes. Sean Barstow has been added as an adjunct instructor as more students enroll and additional classes are required.
