LOGAN — A 22-year-old Logan man has confessed to molesting a 7-year-old girl. Trisden Smith accepted a plea deal and will now wait to be sentenced May 7.

Smith appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday morning. He pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony. As part of the deal, prosecutors dropped the 20 remaining charges against him. Further details about the agreement were not discussed.

Cache County Sheriff’s investigators learned about the crime in January, after the young victim told her mother about being molested. Smith was later arrested and booked into the Cache County Jail.

During Tuesday’s court appearance, Cache County deputy attorney Jacob Gordon said Smith was considered to be a person of trust to the victim. He also clarified that even though the plea deal involved only one felony count, the defendant sexually assaulted the girl multiple times over several years.

The felony charge could still carry a sentence of up to life in prison.

Smith spoke only briefly in court. He told Judge Brian Cannell that he understood the details of the plea agreement and the possible penalty. He also said he was willing to waive his right to a trial.

Smith remains in jail on $200,000 bail.
