Volunteers needed to “scoop poop” from city parks

In an effort to get parks ready for a one-year pilot program allowing dogs off-leash, Logan City staff are asking for help from volunteers.

Starting Monday, the city is hosting several “poop troop” cleanup events to remove dog feces that may already be in the approved parks and trails.

Logan City Council members recently passed an ordinance allowing dogs off-leash in seven city parks. The one-year dog friendly park pilot program begins April 15th.

Volunteers are asked to bring their own shovels.

The times, dates and locations of these events are as follows:

Monday, March 18
5:30 pm
Canyon Road Canal Trail
Meet in Herm’s Inn Parking Lot

Tuesday, March 19
5:00 pm
Stewart Nature Park Trail
Meet at Stewart Nature Park Kiosk

Wednesday, March 20
5:30 pm
Logan River Trail
Meet in Rendezvous Park Parking Lot

Thursday, March 21
5:30 pm
Lundstrom Park Canal Trail
Meet at Lundstrom Park Pavilion

Saturday, March 23
10:00 am
Bonneville Shoreline Trail
Highline Trail
Gateway Trail
Meet at the Canyon Entrance Park

In addition to the clean up, city leaders are launching a public awareness campaign intended to educate and encourage dog owners to be responsible while in parks. Bag dispensers, garbage cans and signage will also be placed in approved parks.

The reason why I do NOT take my dog to ‘dog parks’…. dog owners are RESPONSIBLE for picking up their dog’s poop, no matter where it is. Unfortunately, I routinely spot feces left for ‘someone else’ to clean up…. even in the middle of sidewalks. Coming to live in Logan, by way of NC, DC, MD, WV, and OH….. I have never seen such disregard for sanitation. It’s downright disgusting and about time our city leaders start enforcing the yes, there is an ordinance that requires owners to ‘scoop the poop’.

I considered volunteer work for this project until I read this article. This city lives up to he stereotypes regarding current employees standing around. Everytime I drive past a “crew”, there are five people watching one person work. Our taxes go up every year to give these people a raise and Logan City has enough employees on the payroll who can handle “scooping poop”.
