Judge refuses bail for Logan man suspected of molesting four girls during past 20 years

LOGAN — A judge has ruled again to keep Rand S. Meyerhoffer in jail without bail, calling him a danger to the community. The 45-year-old Logan man is suspected of sexually abusing four young girls during the past 20 years.

Meyerhoffer appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday morning for a bail hearing. He has been charged with four counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony; and voyeurism, a class B misdemeanor.

Defense attorney Jeanne Campbell asked the court to consider bail for her client. She said he does not have a criminal history and has lived in Logan his whole life. As a precaution for community safety, she suggested he be released on pre-trial supervision.

State attorney Jacob Gordon disagreed, calling the suspect a significant danger to society. He noted that there are allegedly four victims that were sexually abused by Meyerhoffer, range from 8-to-31-years-old. He said the crimes have taken place over the past 20-years.

Judge Brian Cannell explained that he was concerned about the severity of the charges and that the court must protect the public by keeping Meyerhoffer behind bars until trial. He ordered the suspect to appear again in court January 30.

According to police, detectives began investigating Meyerhoffer after one of the alleged victims told their mother that the suspect had molested her. She described how he “patted” or “touched” her inappropriately, over and underneath her clothing.

As the investigation continued, three more alleged victims described similar incidents involving Meyerhoffer. The girls ranged in ages from 8 to 11-years-old when the suspected sexual abuses occurred. All of them were acquaintances of the suspect.

The fourth victim, who is an adult now, told police how Meyerhoffer molested her for more than nine years, until she was over 20-years-old. She explained how he would purchase alcohol and drugs for her while she was a teenager. He would also get her drunk and then ask her to expose herself, while he inappropriately touched himself.

The woman claimed that Meyerhoffer took pornographic photographs of her when she was a teenager. She also said he would play “strip poker” with her and another one of the victims.

When detectives interviewed Meyerhoffer, he admitted to taking pictures of “butt cracks.” He also acknowledged to playing strip poker with the victims “a long time ago.”
